The place is especially known for MAHAKALI temple where SHAKTI PEETH was established by SHANKARACHARYA and thus thousands of pilgrims come here for devotion. Along with that, the place GANGOLIHAT is also dedicated to lord SHIVA and during NAVRATRI it has vital importance when pujas and sacrifices are offered to the god. You can also get the clear visibility of PANCHCHULI peaks and NANDA DEVI from here. The small, quaint town is loved by all devotees and travellers. It is a wonderful place to get some mighty and wide views of the Himalayan panorama and of peaks such as PANCHCHULI and KAILASH. PATAL BHUVANESHWAR a very famous tourist spot known for its deep caves underground is another of the major attractions at GANGOLIHAT. All in all it is a wonderful location 82 km away from Pithoragarh for a day long excursion to explore the Himalayan vista and its many ways of life. The place GANGOLIHAT is located at an elevation of 1,760 meters from the sea level and the distance between GANGOLIHAT and PITHORAGARH is only 78 km. you’ll find two popular rivers i.e. SARYU and RAMGANGA that are surrounding the place. GANGOLIHAT is a small hill town nearby to PITHORAGARH and known for its wealthy culture and folk and earliest myths

The best period to visit GANGOLIHAT is from October till March. The weather is refreshingly pleasant and begins to get colder towards the later part of the winter, requiring to carry multiple layers of woollen. The hill town is magnificent during this period as it is flush with greenery and the blooming flowers.
There are many beautiful underground caves in GANGOLIHAT.GANGOLIHAT is famous for its ancient temples and underground caves.’
A new underground cave has been also found recently and that is called BOLESHWAR GUFA. PATAL BHUNESHWAR, SHAILESHWAR GHUFA, and MUKTESHWAR GUFA, are most notable ones.
HAAT KALIKA’, ‘AMBIKA DEWAAL’, ‘CHAMUNDA MANDIR’, ‘VAISHNAVI MANDIR’ are some of the famous temples here. This temple is situated on a mountain that is called ‘SHAIL PARVAT’ which is notable in Hindi holy books. ‘VAISHNAVI MANDIR’ is a special one because one can clearly view Himalayas from here.
HAATH KALIKA MANDIR’ was chosen by SANKARACHARYA for installation of MAHAKALI SHAKTIPEETH. It is believed that the original goddess KALIKA MATA, which supposed to be west Bengal shifted her place from Bengal to GANGOLIHAT. This temple is very famous all over India, especially among Indian army forces. Posthumous PARAM VEEER chakra award winner, Capt. BIKRAM BATRA was a great devotee of goddess and had created an Army rest house area near the temple for Army personnel who come GANGOLIHAT to get the blessings of goddesses, when they are at borders and fighting against their enemy.

How to Reach


By Air: One can easily get a cab for GANGOLIHAT or catch a bus till Pithoragarh and take a connecting bus at Pithoragarh for GANGOLIHAT. The nearest airport is Pant Nagar Airport which is about 250 km from GANGOLIHAT.

By Rail: KATHGODAM Railway Station is the nearest rail head which is 200 km from GANGOLIHAT. One can easily get a cab for GANGOLIHAT or catch a bus from Pithoragarh and take a connecting bus at Pithoragarh for GANGOLIHAT.

By Road: GANGOLIHAT lies at the meeting point of Old Pithoragarh-ALMORA road and the new GHATESHWAR Road meaning it is well connected by motor-able roads. There are many public and private buses which connect the village to nearby towns.
