MUNSYARI region is a paradise for the nature lovers and adventurous souls. ItI is situated in Pithoragarh, the easternmost hill district of UTTARAKHAND, bordering Tibet, which is known as the 'Little Kashmir'. One has a breath-taking view of the Himalayan peak, MUNSYARI is the base for the trekkers to Milam and RALAM Glaciers and Nanda Devi peak.
MUNSYARI is a fairly big & developed Himalayan township at an altitude of 2,298 m. A fast developing centre for skiing and other winter sports. Inhabited by the SHAUKA tribes from time immemorial, it lies on the trade route to Tibet.
A MUNSYARI, is the fundamental base of great Himalayan mountain chain, and also a starting point of various treks into the interior of the Himalayas. Its name, when translated, refers to a 'place with snow'. Situated on the banks of GORIGANGA River, it is a fast growing tourist destination. Glacier fanciers, high altitude trekkers and nature lovers commonly use it as their base camp. MUNSYARI also falls on the ancient 'salt route' from Tibet and is the entrance of the JOHAR valley which extends along the path of the GORIGANGA River to its source at Milam Glacier.
MUNSIYARI is a small place where one can easily avail taxis for commuting from one place to another. There is also an option of renting private vehicle, which is best option just in case of poor road conditions. However, make sure you plan your trip according to climate that prevails in the area. Try to take precautionary steps while travelling to the village during monsoon, heavy rainfalls and landslides.
The hill station has a pleasant climate. Although, it is advisable to avoid visiting during the monsoon season as the climatic conditions can be risky for activities such as trekking will not be possible. Summers are comfortable for the most part. Winters are cold and woollens are required while travelling during this season. The best time to visit the place is from March – June and September and October.
MUNSYARI is an idealistic place, located for the experience of high altitude trekking to various glaciers and it's the base camp for Nanda Devi.
There are vast treks in the surrounding countryside; following the treks are medieval birch, walnut, juniper bush and rhododendron trees. There are a number of BUGYALS, the rolling lush green high altitude meadows.
The newly developed skiing locations are KHALIYA Top and BETULI DHAR.
