KEDARNATH is a spiritual Hindu town situated in UTTARAKHAND. It is one of the CHAR DHAMS located in the Himalayan regions at a height of 3584m above sea level near the top of MANDAKINI River. It is a famous destination for all Hindu devotees visiting from all over the world.
The KEDARNATH temple is situated amidst the striking snow-clad Himalayan ranges and is crowded by tourists every year. The extreme weather condition of KEDARNATH instigates the temple to remain open from the end of April to the beginning of November. It undertakes the twelve JYOTIRLINGAS of KEDAR or Lord Shiva. In KEDARNATH alone there are about more than 200 temples devoted to Lord Shiva.
The Temple stay closed after Diwali for winter session. Tourist explores the winter shrine of Lord KEDARNATH at UKHIMATH.

According to Mahabharata, the PANDAVAS had built the KEDARNATH Temple where they pleased Lord Shiva with their penance. The temple was revived by the great Hindu philosopher, ADI SHANKARACHARYA in the 8th century CE, when he visited the place with his four disciples. Sadly, the temple was hit by the catastrophic floods of 2013, which engulfed hundreds innocent lives.

1.CHAR DHAM –
According to Hinduism, one of the cardinal duties of a righteous Hindu is to partake in pilgrimage to attain liberation or moksha. The DHAMS or holy pilgrimage sites have been visited by sages, saints and seers since antiquity and is still visited by devout Hindus with unflinching faith and devotion. Out of all the holy sites, the venerated Char DHAM is of utmost religious significance.
2.PANCH KEDAR -
UTTARAKHAND is acknowledged as ‘Land of the Gods’ as it has been a place of devotees and pilgrimage since historic times. Lord Shiva is the most admired God in UTTARAKHAND and tourists can discover many temples and monuments dedicated to him. Many local deities of UTTARAKHAND mentioned about Lord Shiva in some form or other.
3.PILGRIMAGE –
DEVBHUMI UTTARAKHAND or the ‘Land of the Gods’ as it is referred, UTTARAKHAND has been a historical and religious place where the Vedas, Mahabharata and Ramayana were composed. Accommodation of the appreciated pilgrimages including the CHAR DHAM YATRA, UTTARAKHAND is a religious magnet which attracts millions of pilgrims and believers endeavouring blessings of the divine.
4.TEMPLES –
The land of thousand temples, UTTARAKHAND has been a religious and spiritual magnet since antiquity. For thousands of years, sages and saints have walked to the Himalayan abode of Lord Shiva and seek blessings from the VASUDEV, The Almighty. There are numerous centuries old shrines and temples in UTTARAKHAND revered by the devotees.
5.TREKKING –
The vast wilderness of the Himalayan state of UTTARAKHAND is an ideal place for adventures and nature lovers to explore and experience. Himalaya trekking and mountaineering in UTTARAKHAND is quite popular with numerous treks and expeditions taking place in the higher altitudes. Summer treks are equally popular as compared to winter treks.

How to Reach


By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport to KEDARNATH located at a distance of 238kms. Jolly Grant Airport is connected to Delhi with daily flights. GAURIKUND is adjoined by motor-able roads with Jolly Grant Airport. From Jolly Grant Airport taxis are obtainable to GAURIKUND.

By Rail: The nearest railway station to KEDARNATH is RISHIKESH. RISHIKESH railway station is situated 216kms before KEDARNATH on NH58. RISHIKESH is well connected by railway networks with major destinations of India. Trains to RISHIKESH are frequent. GAURIKUND is well connected by motor-able roads with RISHIKESH. Taxis and buses are easily available from RISHIKESH to GAURIKUND.

By Road: GAURIKUND is a place where road to KEDARNATH ends and continues with an easy trek of 14km commence. GAURIKUND is well connected by metalled roads with leading destinations. Buses and Taxis to GAURIKUND are easily available from major destinations of UTTARAKHAND like Dehradun, RISHIKESH, HARIDWAR, PAURI, TEHRI, UTTARKASHI, Srinagar, CHAMOLI etc. GAURIKUND lies on National Highway 109 which connects RUDRAPRAYAG with KEDARNATH. Buses to RISHIKESH and Srinagar are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate.
