YAMUNOTRI is located at an altitude of 3293m above sea level in UTTARKASHI district. The origin of River Yamuna, YAMUNOTRI is also one of the four locations of CHAR DHAM pilgrimage. It is enclosed by mountains on all sides and lies in close vicinity of the Indo-China border.
The BANDARPUNCH Himalaya stands at a height of 6315m and lies northwards of YAMUNOTRI. YAMUNOTRI is at a distance of 236 km from RISHIKESH, 21km from SANYA CHATTI, 78 km from DEHRADUN and 176 km from CHAMBA.
Traditionally the YAMUNOTRI temple is the initial stop-over for the CHAR DHAM YATRA. This temple is devoted to Goddess Yamuna. According to legend, YAMUNOTRI is also mentioned in Hindu mythology which was the habitation of an ancient sage, ASIT MUNI. Large numbers of devotees visit this shrine during the months of May to October.
Major attractions of YAMUNOTRI are the YAMUNOTRI Temple established by Maharani GULERIA of Jaipur in the late nineteenth century. Rice and potatoes are cooked by devotees in this water. They also give respect to DIVYA SHILA, a rock pillar just before entering the YAMUNOTRI temple.
1.CHAR DHAM YATRA -
According to Hinduism, one of the cardinal duties of a righteous Hindu is to partake in pilgrimage to attain liberation or moksha. The DHAMS or holy pilgrimage sites have been visited by sages, saints and seers since antiquity and is still visited by devout Hindus with unflinching faith and devotion. By Rail: RISHIKESH and Dehradun are the nearest railway stations to YAMUNOTRI attached by railway networks with major destinations of India. Dehradun railway station is situated about 175kms from YAMUNOTRI and RISHIKESH railway station is located at a distance of 200kms on NH58.
By Road: YAMUNOTRI is directly not connected with motor-able roads and the trek commences from Hanuman CHATTI. Hanuman CHATTI is well connected by motor-able roads with major destinations of UTTARAKHAND state. Buses to RISHIKESH are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate. Buses and Taxis to Hanuman CHATTI are easily available from major destinations of UTTARAKHAND state like RISHIKESH, Dehradun, TEHRI, UTTARKASHI, BARKOT etc.
