ASAN BARRAGE was formed due to the merging of two great rivers of UTTARAKHAND - ASAN and YAMUNA River. The area created by their confluence is today a place full of life, biodiversity and the most unique bird population in the world.
ASAN BARRAGE draws attention of hundreds of species in birds every year to its waters among which are some of the most rare and endangered bird species in the world. The place buzzes with life and as such is a paradise for all the bird lovers out there. It is also popularly known as DHAULIPUR Lake and is thronged by tourists and students alike who come to marvel at its beauty and bird life. Located 32 km west of the city of Dehradun, ASAN BARRAGE is a wonderful place to be one with nature and bask in its infinite glory.
The area is full of lush green trees and a calm 287.5 m long water body which attracts a humungous population of local as well as migratory birds. The area covered by this avian haven is just four sq. km but the profusion of foliage ensures that birds are not disturbed by bird-watching enthusiasts.
The humbling thing is that many of the birds seen here are globally threatened and are listed in the extremely endangered IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red Data book.
Breath-taking sights of mallard or red crested POCHARD, gently swimming a few hundred yards in wilderness is indeed an unforgettable sight. BIRDS IN ASAN BARRAGE –
ASAN BARRAGE serves as a winter passage halt for trans-Himalayan migratory birds. By the end of October the ASAN witnesses the arrival of migrants from pale artic region. These birds are spotted here on their way to southern India (Oct – Nov) and again on their way back (late- Feb – March). Birds of prey like PALLAS fishing eagle, marsh harrier, greater spotted, osprey and steppe eagle add to the grand city. The first to arrive is the SHOVELLER followed by RUDDY SHELDOCK, MALLARD, COOT, CORMORRANT, EGRETS, WAG TAILS, POND HERON to name a few.
By Air: One can easily get a cab for ASAN BARRAGE or catch a bus from the airport. Flights come in frequently from all the major cities in the country. Dehradun has its own airport which connects it to the rest of the country.
By Rail: Cabs are easily available for ASAN BARRAGE outside the railway station. The city has its rail head and connects it to the country.Trains from all parts of the country terminate at Dehradun.
By Road: Public and private buses ply regularly connecting Dehradun to ASAN BARRAGE. ASAN BARRAGE lies 32 km west of Dehradun and is well connected by a highway that goes towards POANTA Sahib.
